Studio Marte Mei

The Netherlands

For Collectible New York, Marte Mei will be presenting a special edition of ceramic wall lamps, glazed with wood ash from beech and pine. The lamps utilize the transparent property of porcelain, suspended from the wall they let through the light in several strengths depending on the material’s thickness. During the day the emphasis is on the property of the natural glaze, creating different shades of green-ish blue and beige-ish green: depending on the location the tree has grown that the glaze was produced from. Marte Mei developed the ash-glaze technique as part of a larger research project around allyship with nature. In the ash-glaze project she uses “Phytoremediation”, a natural process where plants absorb or break down heavy metals from the soil, as a way to connect regeneration and design. She does this by using the ashes of the plant matter as a main ingredient for the ceramic glaze. Creating design as a by-product of soil regeneration and healing of the land.
